Restoring the faith of millions of people in healthcare, AMRI Hospital Bhubaneswar, one of the best multi specialty hospitals in Kolkata successfully removed a 10 KG Ovarian tumor on a 28 year old lady. Measuring 38 cm by 36 cm, it is said to be one of the largest reported Ovarian Tumor.
“The patient had weakness, severe weight loss issues, abnormal fullness after eating, and an increased urge to urinate. Undergoing routine investigation and CECT abdomen, we detected a huge ovarian tumor,” said Dr G S S Mohapatra, the infertility specialist and Gynaec Laparoscopic surgeon who treated the patient.
“The complexity of the case made us certain that any medications or radiation treatment would not suffice. It called for an immediate surgery. If left untreated, the tumor had chances of spreading to other parts of the body. Thus, our major goal was to remove the tumor without damaging the surrounding tissues. However, the large size and weight of the tumor made it a difficult and critical surgery. The mass of the tumor was also put on the patient’s intestine and uterus. Post the surgery, all the vital organs of the patient were in perfect condition, “she further added.
Various studies have highlighted that the incidents of ovarian carcinoma is approximately 15 cases per 100,000 women per year. Ovarian cancer has emerged as one of the most common malignancies affecting women in India. It happens to be one of the most critical diseases that arises from different types of cells within the ovary. Also, it is the root cause of deaths than any other cancer related to the female reproductive system.
The experienced medics at AMRI Hospital Bhubaneswar explain that ovarian cancer mainly occurs due to the formation of a tumor in the ovary’s cells. It usually arises from the epithelium, or lining cells, of the ovary. Moreover, the lack of cancer awareness, variable pathology, and proper screening facilities in developing countries such as India have resulted in increasing cases of this disease.
“The gravity of ovarian cancer makes it important to keep a check on the symptoms of the disease and ensure a timely treatment to combat it. Undergoing a pelvic ultrasound every year especially after the age of 40 can help you detect such ailments at an early stage. Do not ignore any such detectable pathology on ultrasound and go for further tests like CECT of abdomen and markers like CA125,” says AMRI Hospital Group.
Certainly, the successful surgery holds a mirror to the proficiency and mettle of AMRI Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
