mAadhaar app crossed 10 lakh downloads; Learn how to download

Within two months of its launch, the mAadhaar app has gained massive popularity. The app has recently crossed 10 lakh downloads. Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, took to Twitter and wrote, “In just 2 months, 10 lakh people have downloaded m-Aadhaar, thus making it a very popular App among the users.”

maadhar appDeveloped and launched by UIDAI or Unique Identification Authority of India, mAadhaar is a mobile app on which a person can download his/her Aadhaar Card. Effective from September 8, 2017, Indian Railways allowed mAadhaar as one of the proofs of identity for rail travel. For showing Aadhaar, the person undertaking the train journey has to open the app and enter his/her password to show the Aaadhar Card on the smartphone. However, it can be done only using the mobile number to which Aadhaar has been linked.

The idea behind launching the app is to make Aadhaar profile sharing simple, and do it from any smartphone. Where security features of the app are concerned, there is the added measure of entering your password every time you want to do any action on the app.

Here’s your guide to download and use the mAadhaar app

1. Download the app from Google Play store. mAadhaar is currently available for download on Android phones only. Please note that your Aadhaar profile on mAadhaar can be downloaded only on mobile devices where your mobile number is linked with your Aadhaar.

2. mAadhaar will ask for password as soon as it is opened. User should enter a password of length minimum 8 and maximum 12 characters. The password should contain at least 1 number, 1 alphabet, 1 special character and 1 alphabet in capital letter (for example – Sharma@1230)

3. mAadhaar will automatically read the OTP once it is received.

4. Since mAadhaar needs to connect and download data from UIDAI, make sure that internet connectivity is available on your phone.

5. One Aadhaar profile can be active on only one device at a time. If you create profile on another device by inserting the SIM in that device, the previous profile would become inactive and would be deleted from older device whenever any operation is attempted from that device.

6. Access to multiple profiles – If your family members have the same mobile number registered as yours in their Aadhaar, you can add their profiles as well on your device. A user can add maximum 3 profiles on his device, all having same mobile number registered in their Aadhaar.

7. Biometric locking/unlocking – This is a mechanism to secure your biometric authentication by locking biometrics data. Once you enable biometric locking system, the biometric details remains locked till the Aadhaar holder chooses to either unlock it (which is temporary) or disable the locking system.

8. Sharing of QR code and eKYC data by Aadhaar Number holder – Users can share QR code and password protected eKYC data to retrieve accurate demographic information from it instead of manual entry.

9. TOTP generation – Time-based One Time Password or OTP is an automatically generated temporary password which can be used instead of SMS-based OTP.
