Nikkei Asia Prize bagged by Akshaya Patra
The Bengaluru-based NGO; Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) has bagged the Nikkei Asia Prize for its noble cause of supporting education and nourishing children. The award acknowledged the pivotal role played by the organization in ensuring the socioeconomic development of the region. Madhu Pandit Dasa, chairman of the Akshaya Patra Foundation will receive the award on the behalf of the organization at the award ceremony which is to be held in Tokyo on 29th May, 2016.
Madhu Pandit Dasa expressed his gratitude stating that, “It is a great moment of pride for Akshaya Patra. The organization is grateful for the humble service of providing nutrition to the government school children through the mid-day meal programme. This award will give immense encouragement to the Akshaya Patra team to reach greater heights in its service.”
The Nikkei Asia Prize recognizes the outstanding contributions of Individuals and organizations towards the development of Asia. The two individuals who were honoured this year include Prof. Jiang Lei (Science and Technology category) and Dogmid Sosorbaram (Culture and Community category).Akshaya Patra was felicitated for serving mid-day meals to over 1.5 million children, thus providing them an incentive to come to school. The organization aims that ‘No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.’ It aims to reach 5 million children by the year2020 and an award of this stature will only serve to boost its enthusiasm. It works towards eliminating hunger-related needs of primary school children because the NGO believes that the fight against illiteracy cannot be fought with an empty stomach.
