From a small retail shop to an industry leader, Haldiram’s Nagpur has come a long way

Establishing a flourishing empire can be quiet challenging, especially when a person takes the charge of everything and manages it single-handedly. Shivkishan Agrawal, the Founder and Chairman of Haldiram’s Nagpur, India’s leading sweets and snacks  manufacturer, is one such maverick who established his empire with enormous toil.  A self-made man, he has to his credit a very strong sense of business and marketing products. Numerous awards and accolades bestowed upon him reflect his dedication, perseverance and determination towards his work.

Shivkishan Agrawal always cherished the dream of building an empire to manufacture traditional Indian sweets and snacks. Although he had to give up on his studies after sixth standard, Shivkishan fought against all odds to reach where he stands today. He is the perfect precedent of what an ambitious man can achieve in his life. He firmly believes in the philosophy: ‘Whatever you begin, see through to the end and work on it diligently.’

Incorporated in 1937, the brand Haldirams started as a small shop in Bikaner. With years of genuine service, it became an indispensible part of every festival and celebration in India. At present, it offers a wide range of products, including papad, namkeen, sweets, sherbets, Minute Khana, Pani Puri, Bhel Puri, Chips, Boletos, Taktak, Whoopies And Royal Temptations. It is not just limited to sweets but an array of other products such as salted snacks, pasta, biscuits, milk, bread, cool drinks and vermicelli.

With their increasing popularity, Haldiram’s further introduced various delicacies such as sev, jalebi, Mysore pak and papdi followed by Bengali sweets like rasgulla and rasmalai. Talking about the history of Haldiram’s, Shivkishan Agrawal said, “My grandfather, Haldiram Agrawal, began a small sweet shop in 1937 in Bikaner. As customers began to queue up, the business flourished. My grandfather had a friend in Calcutta who requested him to open a shop there. So he opened one in Kolkata and later, two more. We then decided to merge the three shops into a single big unit. Today we’ve a couple of outlets in Kolkata.”

Leveraging its core strength in taste and quality, the small shop transformed itself into a business empire exporting products to over 17 countries across the globe. Shivkishan Agrawal further explained about the increasing popularity of Haldiram’s in Nagpur, as he said, “In 1968, I was asked to go to Nagpur and help my brother-in-law set up our business there.  Once in Nagpur, I tried out innovations to boost the business. We introduced kaju katli (a sweet made of cashew nut) and the public lapped it up. As we progressed, we introduced other delicacies such as sev, jalebi, Mysore pak and papdi, followed by Bengali sweets like rasgulla and rasmalai.”

Further talking about the future growth and expansion prospects of the company, Mr Agrawal said, “We were looking forward to have one Haldiram’s restaurant in Bangalore, India, but right now we have many shops and we have to look after all these businesses. We want to expand through a franchise system but need to ensure quality, se we are taking things slow.”

Certainly, the unrelenting dedication and allegiance of Shivkishan Agrawal have placed him on the pedestal of one of the leading entrepreneurs in India.
