Sanjay Dalmia: Man behind the success of Dalmia Group

Sanjay Dalmia is one of the leading industrialists in India and the Chairman of Dalmia Group of Companies. He was born on March 18, 1944, in Lahore, which was formerly a part of British India. However, he attained his higher education in Delhi, from Modern Public School. The 74-year old holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Hons) from St. Stephens College, Delhi University.

A septuagenarian, Sanjay Dalmia, son of Vishnu Hari Dalmia, was born in a Marwari Baniya family of industrialists. With its roots in Chirawa, a town in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, the family has been in the business for many years. It was initiated by Sanjay’s grandfather, Jaidayal Dalmia.

It was during the first half of the 20th century, when Jaidayal established a group of businesses in East India, along with his brother, Ramkrishna Dalmia. These included a commodity trading business in Calcutta, and a sugar mill in Danapur. Jaidayal Dalmia envisioned the requirements of independent India, which was struggling to provide security to the upcoming new generations.

In 1939, the Dalmia brothers founded Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd, which became operational with four cement plants. By the end of 1940, the Dalmia group had successfully established several sugar mills, cement plants, chemical factories, engineering plants and a paper mill.

The Dalmia brothers, along with Shanti Prasad Jain, who later became the son-in-law of Ramkrishna Dalmia, formed the mammoth Dalmia-Jain Group. However, on 31 May 1948, the group was dissolved due to the differences that had developed between the Dalmias and the Jains.

Jaidayal Dalmia, who can be considered as the foundation of the Sanjay Dalmia family tree, gained control over Orissa Cement Ltd, established in 1949, and Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd. After his demise in 1993, his sons inherited their stakes in the Dalmia Group.

At present, a number of companies and conglomerates trace their origin to the original Dalmia businesses. These include Dalmia Bros Pvt Ltd, Dalmia Bharat Group, Orissa Cement Ltd, Renaissance Group and their subsidiaries.

Sanjay Dalmia’s father and the eldest son of Jaidayal Dalmia, Vishnu Hari Dalmia became one of the scions of the Dalmia Group of Industries. He gained control over Dalmia Bros Pvt Ltd. He was a renowned industrialist in India, and was also a prominent senior member of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, an Indian right-wing Hindu nationalist organization.

After independence, the Sanjay Dalmia family moved to Delhi from Lahore. At that time, Sanjay was very young. His schooling began in Delhi, where he actively took part in debates, conferences and seminars, which were on subjects that extended from politics to economy.

It was in 1965, when Sanjay Dalmia joined his family business, Dalmia Brothers Pvt Ltd, in Odisha (then Orissa). He, along with his brother, Anurag Dalmia, took on the reign of the business from his father, Vishnu Hari Dalmia. As a budding industrialist, Sanjay developed interest for banking, finance, taxation and applicability of industrial developments to the Indian environment.

Within a year, Sanjay was handed over the cement product division with spun pipes for sanitation and PCC poles for electrification. Under his tutelage, the PCC division grabbed a tender of the Bihar Electricity Board.

After his stint in the cement products division, Sanjay Dalmia moved to Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, and assumed charge of the family’s distillery business, which supplied industrial alcohol to the army. However, the family wasn’t keen on this venture, thereby, the Dalmias sold it.

In his long, diverse and successful career spanning over four decades, Sanjay Dalmia has established several industries dealing with a variety of products, including home textiles, herbal products, man-made fibers, telecommunication hardware and software, finance and investment, holiday resorts, soda ash, and others.

Sanjay Dalmia has always looked out for new areas of operation. Therefore, Dalmia Group has various ventures, including Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited (GHCL) Ltd, Bharat Explosives Ltd, Dalmia Healthcare Ltd, Caretel Infotech Ltd, and Golden Tobacco Ltd.

Since January 2005, this leading Industrialist has been the Non-Executive Chairman of GHCL Limited, and the Director at GHCL since October 20, 1983. Besides, he also serves as the Chairman of a subsidiary of GHCL Ltd, Colwell and Salmon Communications (India) Ltd. He is also the Director of Bharat Explosives Ltd. This avid thinker is also believed to have served as the Chairman of Golden Tobacco Ltd, until February 10, 2014.

Sanjay Dalmia has proficiency in several other industries, including information technology, telecommunications, finance and investment, concept marketing holiday resorts, and others. He has always been passionate towards accomplishing his vision, of making India emerge as a global power, through investing outside the country and thinking global.

He is a Founder Director of the Europe-India Chamber of Commerce (EICC), with headquarters in Brussels. It was established with an aim of promoting trade, commerce and investments between India and Europe.

Sanjay Dalmia has also been associated with FICCI – Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry; and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The exemplary has been on the board of directors of the Union Bank of India and a member of the Northern Committee of Industrial Development Bank of India.

People have been trying to know about Sanjay Dalmia net worth, which is not exactly known. However, The Indian Express has released the net worth of the Dalmia family, which is $74,038 (Rs 45.9 lakh).

Apart from the corporate sector, Sanjay Dalmia has played a significant role in Indian politics. He was the Member of Rajya Sabha, where he participated in discussions and debates around national issues related to the economy, finance and the industries of India. Being the member of Rajya Sabha, he also moved a Private Members’ bill, lobbying for the rename Andaman and Nicobar Islands to ‘Shaheed and Swaraj Islands’. The bill was moved as a tribute to Subhash Chandra Bose and the freedom fighters.

Apart from being acknowledged for his overall excellence, nationalistic causes and professional expertise, Sanjay Dalmia is also known as a philanthropist. Having a golden heart, he always takes out time to actively participate in various civic and welfare activities. He has always fought for injustice against the people of India.

His premier concern is to enhance the reach and quality of literary education. Owing to that, he has been putting several efforts in that direction, He is a member on the Board of Trustees of the Indian Literary Society and other educational institutions.

In the year 2001, Sanjay instituted a school for special children, under the name ‘Masoom’. It is an institute dedicated to children of economically weaker sections of the society, and is helping them realize their dreams. Since the inception of Masoom, Sanjay Dalmia has been fond of celebrating his birthday with the children there.

Dalmia Sewa Trust was also started under the aegis of Sanjay, which contributed to several humanitarian activities. These include–

  • Providing sanitary and safe drinking water to people of his grandfather’s birthplace, Chirawa in Rajasthan.
  • Constructing houses for nearly hundred families in Chirawa.
  • Creating lavatories in and around hundreds of houses of Chirawa, which didn’t have toilets due to monetary constraints. Through this initiative, Sanjay Dalmia has depicted his support towards the idea of Swachh Bharat.
  • Organizing free health camps for underprivileged people in Rajasthan, which belong to economically weaker section of the society. These patients include those suffering from asthma, eye ailments, and other such diseases.

All the operations of Dalmia Sewa Trust are conducted and managed from its own resources. The trust has been operating without any aid from the District Administration or from any outside agencies.

Sanjay Dalmia has also taken keen interest towards refining and boosting the basic standard of living. He took efforts towards providing safe drinking water and addressed the issue of sanitation in the area of Madanpur Khadar.

He has always expressed his gratitude towards the freedom fighters who came together to battle against the colonial powers. He formed the Bharat Maa Shaheed Samman Trust, along with Jai Madaan, to work for the dependents of the Martyrs, who won freedom for India, at the cost of their life. The trust extended financial support to their families, for their education and livelihood.

Under the leadership of Sanjay Dalmia, the trust has been organizing a musical programme, under the name, Bharat Maa Gaurav Sandhya. The programme is arranged in various parts of India, and several patriotic songs are played in honor of the freedom fighters. The programme is also meant to instill a sense of gratification and pride, among the young fighters of the society.

In his personal life, Sanjay Dalmia is known as a humble and a soft-spoken person. Apart from business and working for the people, he loves practicing yoga. Besides, he devotedly follows the current affairs. The 74-year old got married to Indu Dalmia (Sanjay Dalmia Wife), and does not have any child.

In his entire life journey so far, Sanjay Dalmia has done full justice to the business that was established by his grandfather and father. Moreover, he has utilized every opportunity of expanding the business, which came his way. The success of Dalmia Group is something that would not have been achieved without the expertise of Sanjay Dalmia.
