Sahara India Pariwar’s Chairman, Subrata Roy Sahara has recently announced to promote the game of chess in the country.
Inaugurating the 18th Delhi International Chess Tournament that began at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on 9th January, SaharaSri said, “Every parent should give their children the time and opportunity to play chess, so that India can become the top-ranked team. India has produced a number of fine chess champions, but we are still at the fifth rank. We should try to be at the top.”
“Sahara India Pariwar has always been fond of games and sports. We will try to get involved with chess as well and promote it,” added the Sahara India Managing Worker, who made an appeal to Indians to join Chess in large numbers.
During the inauguration ceremony, over hundreds of players were present in the stadium. The event was graced with the presence of various prominent personalities. Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary AK Verma, Parth Banerjee of Max Bupa, GST commissioner AM Govil, to name a few. They praised Subrata Roy Sahara for his initiative to encourage Chess across the country. Before leaving, he played Chess with Commonwealth champion Abhijit Gupta.
The 8-day tournament features about three thousand chess masters from 37 countries and almost all Indian states. It will run till 16th January. A total of 1.11 crore rupees will be distributed among winners. The prize money will be 1.25 crore next year, announced the organizers. 37 grand masters and 22 international masters are taking part in the tournament this year.
