As India enters stage 2 of COVID-19 outbreak, production at top companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyndai, Honda, LG, has come to halt. The categories that are likely to be affected by the lockdown include cars, bikes, refrigerators, ACs, and other electronic goods like mobile phones and laptops.
The manufacturing companies said, there would be a review around the month-end to assess whether the lockdown needs to be carried forward. Furthermore, Industry bodies have recommended the companies to consider “limited-period shutdowns” as a precautionary measure.
The move comes in the wake of rising positive cases of COVID-19 in India. Many state governments like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, among others have already announced complete lockdown till 31st March 2020, which includes restrictions on public transportation like Indian Railways, Delhi Metro, etc.
Maruti said the company has taken the decision upon an advisory issued by the Haryana government. The country’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp recently said, we have decided to halt all the operations across our manufacturing facilities in India, Colombia and Bangladesh with immediate effect. “Since malls and shopping complexes have already been closed down, there has been no pressure to immediately have the production facilities up and running,” officials at companies said.
As per the sources, operations at phone companies like Oppo, Vivo are also being reviewed in view of the escalating concerns. The situation is being monitored by all the companies and the suspension of production facilities has been the unanimous decision.
