Lebanon and Israel: Targeting the already shaken?

Decoding the ties behind Beirut explosion. Is history repeating itself or was it really an explosion caused by ammonium nitrate?

In the most recent news about Lebanon, more than 157 people have been killed with over 1500 injured due to the explosion in Beirut. People have had multiple theories around the possible causes of the explosion that took place in the heart of the country. From saying that it may have been the ammonium nitrate explosion from the stranded ship on the port to implying a greater threat – Israel.

The history of conflict between Israel and Lebanon dates back to 1980s. It is said that the conflict began with the Lebanese Civil War, when various militias, formed by the Palestine Liberation Organization, started acting from within Lebanon. PLO was one of the key factors to the eruption of the Lebanese Civil War and its bitter battles with Lebanese factions caused foreign intervention. Israel’s 1978 invasion of Lebanon pushed the PLO north of the Litani River but the PLO continued their campaign against Israel. In 1982, Israel, in alliance with major Lebanese Christian militias, invaded Lebanon again and expelled the PLO.

However, a pact between the two countries was signed in 1983 which would provide a framework for the establishment of cordial bilateral relations amongst them. The pact was later disrupted with takeover of Shia and Druze militias.

Ever since the civil war, Israel repeatedly breached the Lebanese territory through airspace, borders and waters. The most frequent breaches are through airspace where Israeli drones and war planes would circulate their territory. It not only instilled fear amongst the civilians but also paid heed to further territorial conflicts. This illegal activity has happened continuously and almost daily since the 2006 Lebanon war.

Beirut Explosion

As per the sources, the Israelis are allegedly behind the explosion that took place on the 4th of August in Beirut, a transgression committed to gain control over the Lebanese territory. Although, the Israeli government has denied any association with the explosion that took place on the port and provided humanitarian aid to the already struggling country, people of Lebanon think otherwise.

What really happened?

It is safe to say that Israel and Lebanon have had and continue to have conflicts over various matters but did Israel have anything to do with explosion? Will the country go to any extent to establish control over an economically shaken Lebanon? Although Israel has proved to be a rather sneaky country but there is no proof that it had anything to do with the Beirut explosion. In fact, the country has provided humanitarian aid to help in the recovery of the victims. “Israel approached Lebanon through international defense and diplomatic channels to offer the Lebanese government medical humanitarian aid,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said in a joint statement.
