After securing three terms as Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to expand its footprint in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Goa. According to the party, a strategic plan to highlight the issues associated with schools, electricity, water, and health will be implemented to mark AAP’s participation in the Assembly elections of these four states.
Sanjeev Jha, a Burari-based lawyer, has been put in charge of Bihar and AAP has placed various in-charges in 65 districts of Uttar Pradesh. He said, “The AAP will start with the Panchayat elections here. The party is focusing on these elections which are going to be held in Bihar.”
Raghav Chaddha, Vice-Chairman of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Dinesh Mohania, an MLA from Delhi would be leading the AAP preparations in Punjab and Uttarakhand respectively. In January, Mohania is set to visit more than 10 places across Uttarakhand. Furthermore, he is expected to be the most active participant in the door-to-door governance model set to be implemented by AAP across the state.
In addition to the list of four states, Gujarat is going to be AAP’s next target. According to sources, Kejriwal has decided to place MLA Aatishi Marlena as the face of the party in the upcoming Gujarat elections. Experts suggest that the decision comes after Aatishi’s strategic involvement and significant role in transforming the face of government schools in Delhi while working with Manish Sisodia.
Interestingly, AAP has to secure at least 6% votes in each state so as to be recognized as a contesting state party. This will also help in the party’s ambition of achieving official national status before 2024.
However, ghosts of the past continue to loom over AAP. Their newfound campaign could face backlash from the party’s disappointing performance in Punjab during 2017.
