Women-led film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ starring Alia Bhatt hits new records on box-office post pandemic

Alia Bhatt’s recently launched movie “Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has set new records on box-office, collecting 10 crore on the first day of release. Sanjay Leela Bhansali-led movie is garnering praises from all directions.

The film has also become the pandemic’s third-largest box-office opener behind Sooryanshi. It is based on a crime drama in which Alia Bhatt has played the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi, who was tricked into prostitution during 60s. Eventually, she rises to prominence and becomes influential brothel owner. The storyline is based on the chapter ‘Matriarch of Kamanthipura’ from Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’.

In an interview with Subhash K Jha, Bhansali revealed that the film received a standing ovation of over eight minutes. “They clapped for eight minutes after the film was over. When I heard that standing ovation, I got my answer. It made all the pain and effort worth the while,” he said.

After watching Alia’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Karan took to his social media handle to review the film and called it an “unbiased” one. He shared the cover photo of the film and wrote, “To say that she is breathtaking, to say that she is stupendous, to say that she is by far one of the best actors we have or have ever had is not just stating a fact but still not saying enough about her brilliance! Alia Bhatt what are you? Yes, this is unbiased and from my heart! Sanjay Bhansali is a magician and she has performed his every celluloid trick with precision and perfection! #gangubaikathiawadi.”

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a glossier version of Gangubai, who came to Mumbai with her husband Ramnik Lal where he deceived her by selling her to a brothel for Rs 500. The movie portrays her struggles and sacrifice that led to accomplishments later.

One might think that the plot is slow and slightly scattered. Gangubai Kathiawadi is not one of those roaring and rumbling regular Bollywood movies, but its steady plot retains the attention of the audience till the end.
