In the permanently shadowed region, temperatures drop to extremely low levels, as low as -238 degrees Celsius (-396 degrees Fahrenheit). These extreme temperatures endanger the spacecraft and its equipment, making it vital to design the lander to withstand such conditions.

Despite such obstacles, landing at the Southern Pole is of great scientific interest, a fact that was realized in the findings of Chandrayaan-1 itself.
