Lok Sabha Elections 2024:The perpetual game of power in the world’s largest democracy has been officially initiated as the Election Commission of India announced the dates for the Lok Sabha election in 2024. The whole election process will take place between April 19th and June 4th, and it will be spread across seven phases. The electoral body has also announced dates for simultaneous elections that will be held in four states: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

With the official announcement of the general election dates, a defence mechanism against unethical political practices, known as the ‘Model Code of Conduct(MCC)’, has also come into effect. In his statement, the Chief Election Officer, Rajiv Kumar, has urged all political parties and their leaders to maintain strict adherence to the MCC and has also laid down a list of Do’s and Don’ts for them to follow during their election campaigns. The MCC also restrains the Central Government from announcing any policies in this period. It covers aspects such as general conduct, meetings, processions, polling day, polling booths, and the party in power.

Electoral Body Starts Axing Top Officials Across States To Bring ‘Neutrality’

The country’s electoral body recently ordered the immediate removal of top officers from different states who were holding dual charges, with one of them holding office in the Chief Minister’s office. Once the general elections are officially announced, all the officers employed by the central and state governments are placed under the authority of the Election Commission of India, which helps them take the necessary steps to ensure a fair election and equal opportunities for all parties involved. These steps include the power of posting these officers anywhere inside the country’s administrative structure. 

Among the transferred individuals are West Bengal’s DGP Rajiv Kumar, Brihanmumbai’s Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Chahal, and the home secretaries of Gujrat, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. The secretaries of the general administration departments of Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh were also removed.

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) is preparing for the elections by discussing seat-sharing arrangements, forming key panels, and planning a public campaign. They aim to address issues such as unemployment and price rise and present a united front against the current government. 

Even with the united political alliance of more than 25 national and regional political parties, which the Indian National Congress is leading, it still hasn’t found its leader who will become its PM face, challenging current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim over the seat of power. 

What Will Prevail: Perseverance or Transference? 

As we approach the 2024 general elections, it is essential to keep our focus on driving economic growth for the country. To achieve this, we need to prioritize policies that invest in health and education, tackle urban housing challenges and maintain a robust global presence through strategic foreign policies.

If a new government comes into power, it will need to address similar challenges, leverage India’s demographic dividend, improve healthcare and education infrastructure, and navigate external challenges, particularly China’s growing influence in Southeast Asia. India’s future depends on the practical implementation of policies that aim to promote sustainable and inclusive progress for the nation’s growth and development.
