In the wake of the Nice attack, Mahathir Mohammad, former prime minister of Malaysia, has made an attempt to defend Muslims by tweeting “Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past.”
In addition to his tweet, he posted a blog with the title of “Respect Others”. Although he did not mention the recent attack in Nice directly, he began with reference to the killing of Samuel Paty. He was a teacher who was beheaded by an 18-year-old Chechen radical. The ex-prime minister also said, “Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past. But by and large the Muslims have not applied the ‘eye for an eye’ law. Muslims don’t. The French shouldn’t. Instead the French should teach their people to respect other people’s feelings.” Mahathir Mohammad also accused the current French president, Emmanuel Macron, of being uncivilized and “primitive”.
According to his blog, it was said that the actions weren’t in the teachings of Islam. However, the religion professes the fact that angry people kill. The French have killed millions of people in their history, among which, Muslims were greater in number.
He addressed Macron by saying that he has blamed Muslims and their religion on the basis of what was done by a single person, this gives Muslims the right to be angry and punish those who have atrocious in regards to them. Following the statement by the French PM, French products have been banned in certain Muslim countries as well.
German Chancellor Angela also expressed her grief and disappointment over the killing by stating that she was shaken by the brutal murders in the Nice church. She paid her condolences to the relatives of the murdered and injured as well. She also stated that Germany stood with France during this time.
