From senator to America’s first female Vice President: Kamala Harris’s incredible journey

‘I may be the first, but won’t be the last’ this statement by Kamala Harris in her first speech as the Vice President has motivated women across the world who feel that their colour or background divert them from achieving their life goals.

Her journey to this historic juncture has been a complicated one. Born in Oakland, California on October 20th, 1964 to Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris, Kamala Devi Harris has become America’s first female Vice President. Many new honorable titles are now attached with the 56-year-old Democratic Senator from California as she became America’s first female, first Black and first South Asian person to be elected as the Vice President, exhibiting the new era of political power.

Being the daughter of an Indian mother who was a cancer biologist and an African-American father from Jamaica who worked as an economist at Stanford University, her immigrant parents shaped her life. The combination of a Black and Brahmin background is rare and unusual. Harris was mentored in the Bay Area and used to visit her extended family quite often in India.

After graduating from law school, she started her career as deputy district attorney in the prosecutors’ offices Alameda County, California and spent eight years before shifting to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office as assistant district attorney.

In the year 2003, Kamala Harris secured her initial race for San Francisco district attorney, and became the first Black woman to hold such an office in California. Also, she was the first Indian American elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 2016 and represented California.

Harris also credits her Indian civil servant grandfather PV Gopalan for her success as he had a great influence on her and shaped her interest in public service during childhood days. Reaching great heights and attaining commendable success, the incredible journey of Kamala Harris shows what an ambitious woman with sheer dedication can achieve in life.
